Shop with us

The Village Shop is conveniently located in the heart of Brompton Regis. Run by local people for local people and visitors to the village, your shop offers so much more than milk and bread – it helps keep the village alive.  And, unlike the big supermarkets, the benefits don’t leak away to big chains – they stay right here.

The shop is at the heart of the village life and offers:

  • Convenience – with everyday essentials close to home, vital for those without transport
  • A friendly place to shop, meet and stay connected with staff who know you by name
  • Weekly accounts for local customers so you can pop in, even if you’ve left your purse, wallet or card at home
  • Local support – volunteer opportunities, profits reinvested into the shop, sales for local producers and suppliers
  • A focal point for village activities such as the village show, food bank donations and signing up for events
  • Resilience and self-sufficiency during tough times – snow, ice, power cuts and we were there for you during the pandemic (when other shops felt unsafe)
  • Pride and belonging – builds ownership and togetherness

Your shop keeps the village alive, self-sufficient, and connected.
Support us even when you don’t need us… so we can be here for you when you do.

We are open all year round and stock a wide range of everyday essentials and locally sourced produce, such as:

  • Fresh bread and milk
  • Freshly prepared pizza ready for you to cook at home
  • Fresh fruit and vegetables
  • Locally produced and sourced meat and poultry
  • Eggs, bacon, sausages
  • Local cheese, pates, cold meats
  • Beer, wine and a selection of spirits
  • Ice creams and confectionery
  • Newspapers and magazines
  • Maps, postcards, stamps

Other Ways to Support Us

Become a volunteer
Our volunteers are vital to the success of the shop, and we are always looking for new members to join the team. You don’t need to have any experience, just a willingness to get involved.

If you would like to find out more, please call, email or pop into the shop.

Become a shareholder
If you haven’t already done so, become a shareholder of the Village Shop Society. We have more than 150 members and would love you to join us.

There is a one-off payment of £10 per person to become a shareholder, simply download the application form or pick up a copy from the shop and return this with your payment.

This financial support itself is valuable to us but also demonstrates the level of local commitment and helps us to gain grant funding for development and maintenance.

History

The Village Shop was set up in July 2008, following the closure of the Village Stores and Post Office – a victim of the post office closures in that year.

The shop’s first official home was the skittle alley of The George Inn, where it was managed by Trish Kirkby, the landlady.

In 2012, and with the benefit of National Lottery funding and other grants, the shop moved to its current home at the Village Hall, taking over the snooker room.

In 2020, and just a couple of weeks before lockdown, Maria Lloyd took over as Shop Manager. Maria and her husband Martin took the village shop to another level by introducing of a much wider range of products, improving management systems and updating technology.

In 2021, the shop received a much-needed face lift, thanks to a grant from the Somerset Coronavirus Response and Recovery Fund. This grant allowed us to increase freezer capacity and create a social space by introducing a coffee machine and outside seating area.

Chris Cherry became Shop Manager in May 2024 after Maria announced her retirement. Chris had been a volunteer for almost six years and was Chair of the Village Shop Management Committee before standing down to take on the more hands on role of manager.
