What an amazing day we had for this year’s show and gymkhana. After the heatwaves and ongoing lack of rain this summer we felt sure the weather would break for us but as it turned out the day was just perfect – not too hot, not too cold, and not wet or windy. If only we could pre-book that for every year.
The show committee would like to thank everyone who made the day such an outstanding success from all our volunteers, helpers and stallholders to judges, stewards, and all competition sponsors, as well as those who filled jars and sponsored the show in so many other ways. We cannot do it without you, and we also cannot do it without the many visitors and competitors who come to the show and enjoy a day out.
A true community occasion and we hope everyone who participated in any way enjoyed their time at the show with friends and family – thank you for spending time with us.
This year had some new ventures as well as the return of the usual favourites. It was great to welcome Nigel Penfold of North Devon Hawk Walks and his stunning birds of prey. I think many people enjoyed meeting the birds and talking to Nigel about them.
Bob Pegg very kindly brought along a couple of his steam locomotives and a mill engine and was happy to talk to anyone who wanted to know more about them.
West Somerset Brass Band came to visit the show for the first time this year, kindly sponsored by Kevin and Jane Lawes, and gave us an afternoon interlude of popular music for people to either sit and listen to or have playing in the background whilst enjoying other attractions. We are hoping they will be able to return next year – they were suitably bribed with afternoon tea and cake provided by Sherry Wade and her helpers.
Our horse show had a great number of entries in many of the events, and it was good to be able to give our judges plenty of talent to choose from in the various classes. Hard ground and equine influenza were particular challenges this year, but we are especially grateful to Leo White for presenting the show field to us with a good covering of grass giving our competitors some of the best going available locally. We were also pleased to welcome back the West Somerset Foxhounds to display for us.
Returning for a second year and this year also taking on the Auction of Produce at the end of the day was our commentator Les Silverlock. He had big boots to fill taking that role on from Edward Luxton, but he did an excellent job for his first time, and we will hopefully be persuading him to do it all again next year.
And talking of next year the date is set for Saturday August 14th 2027 – we look forward to seeing you all there!
